Thursday & Friday Weaving Workshop

9:00 a.m. - Noon KNITTING WITHOUT NEEDLES
Instructor: Alice Murphy
For the needle challenged, learn to knit and do most knitting pattern stitches on a knitting rack. You will make a hat in class, but you will take home directions for other projects as well.
MATERIALS: Rake and yarn will be provided with a stitch handout.

10:00 a.m. - Noon WAGON OR BUGGY WHEEL WEAVING
Instructor: Phyllis Shipman
Wagon wheel weaving came from the need for rugs when the pioneers settled on the land they built their homes. The metal portion of the wagon wheel provided the frame. Scraps of fabric or wool were used for making the rugs. This class will allow you the chance to make a much smaller version of the rug by using a 12" hoop used in making a basket. Your finished product can be used for either a coaster or potholder.
MATERIALS: The hopps, pusher stick (popsicle stick) and fabric strips will be provided by the instructor. Participants may have scrap fabric or a particular color preference. You can cut 16 strips of fabric 2"x22" and a weaving strip in 2"x24-36" or a manageable length with which to weave. Please bring a pair of scissors to class.
MATERIAL FEE: $3.50 for the hoop if students bring their own fabric.

10:00 a.m. - Noon CREATING A USEFUL YARN IN HALF THE TIME

Are you turned off from spinning after spending endless hours picking, washing, drying and carding fleeces for spinning? Why not get back into the fun of spinning and learn to spin in the grease? You will learn the following:
1) How to spin in the grease
2) How to wash the yarn following spinning
3) How to dry skeins of yarn effectively
You can do all of this in half the time it takes to spin, just pick up the wool and learn to spin in the grease, such fun!
MATERIALS: This class is for intermediate spinners. Bring your own spinning wheel and/or drop spindle. Wool will be provided or you can bring your own wool.

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. FELTING A WATER BOTTLE COZY
Instructor: Judy Crouch
Bring your favorite size water bottle and learn how to felt using wool and designs to help keep your water cool for long periods of time. The beauty of the wool felt will be admired by all. Learn how to lay out wool and follow up with the felting process that is so much fun and satisfying.
MATERIALS: Materials will be furnished with the exception of the water bottle which students will need to provide.

2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. MERRY CHRISTMAS LAMB ORNAMENT

Students will learn to make a lamb ornament from wool roving and pipe cleaners to hang on your Christmas tree.

2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. BEGINNING HANDSPINDLE SPINNING
Instructor: Susan Wilson
Would you like to learn to spin your own yarn, but don't want to make the initial investment in a spinning wheel until you know if you will like spinning? Learning to spin on a hand spindle (drop spindle) may be your solution! The class fee includes a handcrafted ash wood spindle for you to keep ($16 value), and a book, "Spindle Spinning from Novice to Expert" written by Connie Delaney ($13 value). You will learn to spin singles from a variety of wool preparations (roving, raw fleece, combed top, etc. and other fibers). You will also learn how to ply this single ply yarn into 2-ply yarn.

5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m CRO-STICK OR TUNISIAN CROCHET
Instructor: Saundra Lunceford
Cro-stick or Tunisian crochet dates back to the 1800's. Using two colors of yarn and a wooden needle with hooks on each end, students will create a reversible item from a small dish cloth to a large Afghan in one piece. It would be helpful if students have some experience with a crochet chain. Yarn for dish cloth provided.

8:00 a.m. - Noon BASIC NATURAL DYE
Instructor: Jeffy Wilson
Basic processes in natural dyeing will include the fiber processing, scouring and mordanting of fibers. The student will receive a 4-ounce skein of wool yarn and dye portions of it in at least two colors in the dye baths. The remainder of the yarn (as it is mordanted) may be taken home and experimented with in other easily obtained dye plants found everywhere in the fall.

9:00 a.m. - Noon THE AMAZING ANGORA RABBIT
Instructor: Nancy Barnett
Using a live bunny rabbit, the student will learn to handle and groom an Angora rabbit, how to care for it, how to harvest the wool and how to spin rabbit fiber. Spinning Angora wool directly from the rabbit into yarn from French, English and German Angora rabbits will be learned. The student till receive a nice notebook with lots of good information on rabbit care and tips on spinning. Please bring your spinning wheel or drop spindle and hand cards if you have them. A small towel for your lap to catch the fibers is helpful. A drawing for the demonstration bunny will be held for interested participants at the end of the class.

Instructor: Susan McFarland
Making a felt hat very simply using your wool or wool provided by the instructor will be covered in this workshop. Susan will reveal her tips of her vast experiences in hat felting. There are many methods of felting in hat making. Students bringing wool must check out the wool to determine its felting characteristics. This class is for beginners, intermediate and advanced felters.

10:00 a.m. - Noon SPINNING WOOLEN & WORSTED YARN
Instructor: Darlene Megli
The students will be using raw fleece to prepare and spin a woolen, semi-woolen, worsted and semi-worsted yarn. Bring your wheel and the usual assorted spinning tools, hand cards, flick carder, small hand combs and labels for your skeins of yarn. This class is for intermediate spinners.

1:00 p.m.- 3:30 p.m MAKING A WET AND NEEDLE FELTED BIRDHOUSE
Instructor: Joi Chupp
Learn the principles of wet and needle felting and also dyeing with Kool-aid. The students will create a birdhouse using wet felting methods and adding embellishments such as birds and eggs, etc. This is a fun class for all ages. Students may wear older clothing to prevent koolaid dye color.

1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m MAKE A CD SPINDLE AND LEARN HOW TO USE IT
FOR SPINNING

Bill Barnett will help you learn how to make a CD drop spindle and Nancy Barnett will teach you how to spin on it. Students will learn much about spinning in general and how to draft and make yarn using a CD drop spindle.

2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m MAKING A PRESSED FLOWER PICTURE
Instructor: Donna Turney
The student will learn to take flowers from the yard or garden and make a beautiful framed picture to hang on a wall or set on a table. Makes a wonderful gift. The student will learn how to choose the flowers, the type of flowers suitable for pressing and which flowers will hold their color when pressed. You may bring your own frame for your picture.
MATERIALS: All materials will be furnished, except the frames and mats which will be available for purchase.

3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m KUMIHIMO OR JAPANESE BRAIDING ON A DISK
Instructor: Alice Murphy
Participants will learn one braid with directions for others. The technique allows the making of many different patterns of braids which can be used as belts, hatbands, handles, or whatever you would work using a narrow band.

9:00 a.m. - Noon DYEING AND SPINNING NATURAL FIBERS
Instructor: Sue McFarland
Participants will learn to have fun with dyes other than natural that are in a a variety of techniques to result in creative yarns to be used in knitting, weaving and crocheting. Explore different methods of dyeing with wool and silk. Learning to dye yarn on design boards to make the yarns exact for knit patterns will be covered. Learn to paint a warp and silk caps, hankies, silk and wool roving for that fabulous project you have been wanting to make. Bring your spinning wheel as Susan will demonstrate spinning fibers dyed in the technique learned in this class. Your yarn will be "one of a kind" to make your project the same. Students will go home motivated to share what is learned in this class with fellow guild members.

Using a set of wooden needles, students will learn how to weave narrow weft faced bands that can be used as head bands, belts, straps or other uses as neeeded.

9:00 a.m. - Noon SPINNING ALL GRADES OF WOOL INTO APPROPRIATE DIAMETERS OF YARN FOR KNITTING AND WEAVING
Instructor: Helen Swartz
Grades of wool from 70 (fine) down to 36 (coarse) will be chosen for spinning and/or weaving projects. Wool is acid dyed and some is natural in color. Wool will be measured in wraps per inch following spinning to determine the best spin. Some batts of wool have been blended with silk and some wool, silk and Angora rabbit wool.
Fibers will be spun to help spinners determine the best "spin" to put on a particular fleece, roving, bump, batt, etc. Project uses for wool and wool/blends will be discussed as students spin the various grades o0f wool and wool blends provided in the class to take home and use for future reference in selecting fleeces.
Merino, Rambouillet, Corriedale, Romney and Lincoln breeds of wool roving will be provided, as well as Angora rabbit wool and silk, both Bombyx and wild. Some fleeces have been dyed various colors and blended with other fibers, some are natural. Learn to spin the right grade of fleece to result in the outcome expected in the planned project you have on your calendar. The class will discuss projects appropriate for each grade of wool and blends. Wool yarn will be spun in samples to be used for felting bags, as well as projects for lace knitting and weaving, the goal for spinning in this class.

Instructor: Deb Brandt "Dudleyspinner"
This class will show you how to make a small rose with wool and a felting needle. No special skills are required. The needle is used to poke the fiber and create felt petals, stem and leaves. We will use a small felt ball to do the needle felting on. These will not be included, but will be available for sale.

Forget the "common knowledge" that Llamas are only pack animals and their hair is only good for rugs! Recent archaeological research has found that the garments worn by the Incan elite were of Llama and not alpaca! Never had a chance to spin Llama? Now is the time and place to learn how. Revel in the luxury of spinning whisper soft hair from the specially bred Llamas of High Chaparral in southeastern Missouri.
SUPPLIES: The instructor will provide bumps of Llama wool in various colors. Students will need to bring their own spinning wheel or drop spindle and grab a chair.
